Critic’s Pick: Classic films for fall nights

Share

Anyone doubting the richness of movie-related choices available in Los Angeles should be convinced by the events taking place over the next week or so.

This weekend at the Getty Villa’s outdoor theater, a pair of classic films based on the Orpheus myth will be screened at 7:30 p.m. Showing on Friday is Jean Cocteau’s 1950 “Orpheus,” and Saturday is the date for 1959’s gorgeous, Oscar-winning “Black Orpheus.” Themed cocktails will be available on both nights.

For those with more muscular taste, the 30th anniversary of “The Terminator” will be marked by a Wednesday screening at the American Cinematheque’s Egyptian Theatre as well as a panel including Arnold Schwarzenegger, James Cameron and Gale Anne Hurd.

Finally, for anyone who likes to plan ahead, Oct. 18 marks the 20th anniversary of Music Box Steps Day, a lively street fair commemorating the great Laurel & Hardy short “The Music Box.” The fair is at the 900 Vendome St. site in Silver Lake where the film was shot.
