Review: It’s all in the family for Kevin Smith’s sloppy horror-comedy ‘Yoga Hosers’

“Yoga Hosers” is a spinoff of Kevin Smith’s last film, “Tusk,” a project that he conceived of on a podcast and then took to Twitter for a fan vote. In “Tusk,” a grotesque horror comedy about a man being turned into a walrus, Smith’s teen daughter Harley Quinn Smith and co-star Lily-Rose Depp — Johnny Depp’s daughter — had a scene where they played surly Canadian convenience store clerks. “Yoga Hosers” is their story.

The good news: “Hosers” is significantly more fun than “Tusk.” The girls are cute and sassy, if boxed into cellphone-obsessed teen stereotypes. Lily-Rose Depp gets the better role as the sharper Colleen C. and demonstrates a charismatic presence that jumps off the screen compared with Harley Quinn Smith, who shrinks in the thankless role of dim bulb Colleen M.

With Father Smith playing one of the murderous Nazi bratwursts (“Bratzis”) terrorizing the Eh-2-Zed convenience store, and assorted familial cameos, the entire film has the strange feel of watching an elaborately produced home movie to be played at a holiday party rather than a movie theater.

There’s enough weirdness for “Yoga Hosers” to possibly generate some stoner cult appeal, but it’s shoddily slapped together, with a clearly first-draft script, terrible editing (by Smith the elder) and continuity errors. The best moments are when the girls perform in their pop punk band Glamthrax, but the musical numbers only add to the proud dad vibe. It should come with a warning: for family, friends and super fans only.
