Silent versions of children’s literary classics will be screened under the stars at the Heritage Square Museum in Los Angeles this summer.

The series kicks off on July 20 with the fanciful 1924 adaptation of J.M. Barrie’s “Peter Pan,” starring Betty Bronson as Peter, Ernest Torrence as Captain Hook, Mary Brian as Wendy, Virginia Brown Faire as Tinker Bell and Anna May Wong as Tiger Lily. The great James Wong Howe supplied the magical cinematography.

On tap for July 27 is a 1915 version of “Alice in Wonderland,” starring Viola Savoy in the title role.

The series ends Aug. 23 with the 1925 version of “The Wizard of Oz,” a very loose adaptation of the L. Frank Baum classic. Directed by comedian Larry Semon, who also plays the Scarecrow, the film stars his wife, Dorothy Dwan as Dorothy and a pre-Stan Laurel Oliver Hardy as the Tin Man.

The screenings will take place on the lawn near the Palms Depot. Everyone is encouraged to bring chairs or blankets and warm clothing.
