Coachella 2013: Third Man Records rock for Record Store Day

Third Man Records celebrated Record Store Day with a pop-up party at the Ace Hotel on Saturday, featuring Carly Ritter, Courtney Jaye and the Dough Rollers.

It was a laid-back, sun-soaked affair, with the Dough Rollers playing last at the peak of mid-afternoon heat. Their jagged blues rock set fit perfectly with the sweltering heat, as the crowd lolled in yellow inner tube floaties in the crystalline pool. The skin on display -- and there was much of it -- was reddened by sun. A life guard that looked suspiciously like Josh Tillman of Father John Misty fame looked on with sullen concentration.

At one point the guitarist Malcolm Ford (son of Harrison Ford) broke his tuner, prompting singer Jack Byrne (son of Ellen Barkin and Gabriel Byrne) to quip, “We’ll have to entertain you with anecdotes of drugs until he tunes.”

“Did you like that joke?” he asked after a lazy smattering of applause. But once back to the music, Byrne’s raspy, constantly cracking voice would -- and obviously does -- make Mr. Third Man Records White himself proud.

But the band, like the audience, seemed a bit sapped. Perhaps because only in this corner of America would a edgy, country-rock-smeared band dare play at the height of siesta.
