Catch DJ Food’s ‘Star Wars’ megamix while you still can

Quick, grab it before it gets taken down again! The remarkable mixologist DJ Food has crafted a new 30-minute “Star Wars” video and music mix that combines curious versions of work from George Lucas’ sci-fi franchise.

The artist behind it, DJ Food (a.k.a. Strictly Kev), is a respected sonic artist, producer and graphic artist who has offered a series of themed mixes, the best known of which is his reverse engineering (with collaborators DJ Cheeba and DJ Moneyshot) of the Beastie Boys’ “Paul’s Boutique.”

This one is more compact but no less mesmerizing. Filled with thrills for fans of the “Star Wars” franchise and of masterful DJ mixes, it’s called “The Tracks Go Off in This Direction” and draws on sound from John Williams’ classic scores, melded together with dialog and sound effects into a continuous half hour of music.

If it were only a music mix, the DJ might have less cause for worry regarding illegal usage. But, alas, the work infringes on so many “Star Wars” trademarks and copyrights that it’s a wonder the thing has stayed up this long. In fact, on Monday morning Food tweeted some bad news: “Sorry everyone - ‘the powers that be’ have asked me to take down the Star Wars mix. Hope you enjoyed it while you could, it will return tho’.”

Not long after, the artist wrote that he’d been given a reprieve and offered a new link: “and it’s back … (for the moment).” “The Tracks Go Off in This Direction” is currently available, and considering that the Vimeo page offers listeners the opportunity to download the file, it should continue popping up in many directions.
