Twin Shadow will play Prince’s ‘Purple Rain’ — all of it — next month at Hollywood Forever Cemetery

George Lewis Jr. knows about ghosts — and about cemeteries.

For his most recent album as Twin Shadow, last year’s “Eclipse,” the Los Angeles-based synth-rock specialist set up a recording studio in a small chapel at Hollywood Forever, then proceeded to make a record seriously haunted by echoes of the 1980s: George Michael, Simple Minds, U2 circa “The Joshua Tree.”

Now Lewis is returning to Hollywood Forever to reanimate a very specific spirit: the late Prince, whose landmark 1984 album “Purple Rain” he’ll perform in its entirety in a concert scheduled for Sept. 23 at the cemetery on Santa Monica Boulevard where show-business legends such as Douglas Fairbanks and Rudolph Valentino are buried.

It won’t be the first tribute at Hollywood Forever to Prince, who died April 21 of an accidental opioid overdose at his Paisley Park estate in Minnesota. In July, the cemetery hosted an outdoor screening of “Purple Rain,” an encore of an event held in 2014 that also featured a DJ set by Questlove of the Roots.

And Twin Shadow is set to repeat its performance of the album – which includes hits like “Let’s Go Crazy,” “I Would Die 4 U” and the title track – in October at New York’s Meadows Music and Arts Festival.

Tickets for the L.A. show, set to take place inside the cemetery’s Masonic Lodge, will go on sale Friday.
