All eyes will be on Gustavo Dudamel when he takes the L.A. Philharmonic baton next month. But it’s not all about him. Here, some of his 106 musicians express their anticipation for the landmark season ahead.

“Of course I’m so excited about working with Gustavo Dudamel. I am looking forward to being part of the world premiere of Stephen Hartke’s Symphony No. 4, ‘Organ.’ The concert should be great with Gustavo conducting, featuring the organ (which we rarely get to hear with the orchestra), a world premiere (this means a living composer!), and Tchaikovsky’s ‘Pathetique’ Symphony. I can’t wait to experience the emotion of the ‘Pathetique’ with Gustavo!”

“Certainly for me, as probably for most of my L.A. Phil colleagues, the most anticipated feature of this season is our first extended opportunity to make music together with our new music director -- Maestro Dudamel. There is no doubt in my mind that his weeks with us will be filled with many memorable highlights. Still, there is one program to which I look forward with particular excitement.

“When Gustavo was on our podium last fall in his latest all-too-brief stint as a guest conductor, I was admiring his progress and maturation as a musician. It was especially rewarding for me to see how he was able to shape phrases and make the orchestra sing where music demanded it. During one of the rehearsals, the following brief thought suddenly flashed inside of my brain -- He would surely be fantastic in Verdi’s Requiem! At the time, I had no idea whether he had ever done that piece before. (As it turned out, he hadn’t but was about to very soon.) Imagine my delight when just a couple of months later I learned that he was in fact scheduled to conduct our orchestra and the fabulous L.A. Master Chorale, together with four vocal soloists, in that very piece this coming November. For me personally, it became the most eagerly awaited week of the season. In my opinion, the so-called Manzoni Requiem by Giuseppe Verdi is one of the greatest pieces ever written for human voices with symphony orchestra, and I believe that with Gustavo’s formidable conducting skills, combined with his unerring musical instincts and complete emotional involvement, there is a good chance that something truly special is going to happen in the Walt Disney Concert Hall during those sublime 90 minutes of music.”
