Hugh Jackman got his star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame on Thursday, introduced by Jay Leno and supported by his “Les Miserables” costars Anne Hathaway and Amanda Seyfried. “I believe this is the 2,487th star on the Walk of Fame,” Jackman told the crowd, “however, apart from Lassie, I’m the only one who’s gotten it for playing the same character in 15 movies.”
A sitar legend dies, Charlie Sheen helps out a child with cancer and Justin Bieber is an apparent target in a foiled murder plot, all in this week’s Hollywood headlines.
In light of recent misdemeanor charges, Lindsay Lohan is once again looking at the possibility of jail time. In a seemingly endless string of troubles, the actress’ probation stemming from a 2011 jewelry theft case has been revoked -- after the “Liz & Dick” star was slapped with three misdemeanor counts from a June traffic accident. Lohan’s longtime counsel Shawn Holley appeared in Los Angeles on Lohan’s behalf on Wednesday, where an updated court date of Jan. 15 was given to decide her fate.
Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln,” the musical epic “Les Miserables” and the romantic comedy “Silver Linings Playbook” dominated the Screen Actors Guild Award nominations with four nominations apiece on Wednesday. Also honored with ensemble nominations were the casts from “Argo” and “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.” The 19th Screen Actors Guild Awards presentation is to be carried live on TNT and TBS on Jan. 27 from the Shrine Auditorium & Exposition Center in Los Angeles. As previously announced, Dick Van Dyke is set to receive the guild’s lifetime achievement award. (Al Seib / Los Angeles Times)
Anne Hathaway is taking the moral high ground over her lack of underwear. Understandably, the “Les Miserables” actress would not have chosen the film’s New York premiere to be snapped exiting her car without any unmentionables on -- but such is the life of an actor. “It kind of made me sad on two accounts. One was that I was very sad that we live in an age when someone takes a picture of another person in a vulnerable moment and rather than delete it ... sells it,” Hathaway said to “Today” anchor Matt Lauer. “And I’m sorry that we live in a culture that commodifies sexuality of unwilling participants.”
Justin Bieber was the target of a bizarre plot designed to kill the superstar and, according to some reports, deprive him of part of his anatomy. A plan to kidnap and castrate the pop star at a Madison Square Garden performance last month in New York has been foiled by authorities. The plan seems to have begun with Dana Martin, 45, who is serving two life sentences for the rape and murder of a 15-year-old girl in Vermont in 2000.
Ravi Shankar, 92, who introduced Indian music to much of the Western world, died Tuesday at a hospital near his home in Encinitas. Stuart Wolferman, a publicist for his record label Unfinished Side Productions, said Shankar had undergone heart valve replacement surgery last week. Well-established in the classical music of his native India since the 1940s, he remained a vital figure on the global music stage for six decades. Shankar is the father of pop music star Norah Jones and Anoushka Shankar, his protege and a sitar star in her own right.
Charlie Sheen’s generosity continues: The “Anger Management” star and his stunt double have contributed a total of $100,000 to a Hermosa Beach Police Officers Assn. fund benefiting an officer’s cancer-stricken daughter. “Big news today for the Faulk family. Together, Eddie Braun and Charlie Sheen donated $100,000.00 to the HBPOA in support of Jasmine’s fight against cancer,” said a post on the fund’s Facebook page, which included a photo of Sheen’s check. “All proceeds go to the Faulk family to support their daughter. On behalf of the HBPOA, the Faulk family and those who support children fighting cancer, we thank you for your generous donation.” Sheen dropped $75,000 from his “pocket account” while Braun kicked in $25,000. The contribution came a day after the actor was chatting with a Hermosa Beach officer about the girl’s situation and proclaimed, “No parent should have to watch their kid go through that,” TMZ reported.
