Annie and Scripter award winners named
Two Academy Award best picture nominees each took home top prizes at the 37th annual Annie Awards and the 22nd annual Scripter Award on Saturday.
Disney/Pixar’s blockbuster “Up” won Annies, which honor animated films, for best picture and director (Pete Docter), and the dramedy “Up in the Air” earned the Scripter, which is awarded for film adaptation.
“Up,” the story about the friendship between a lonely old man and an equally lonely young boy and the floating house that takes them on an adventure, received multiple Oscar nominations last week including best film and best animated feature. The film has won numerous critics’ honors, as well as the Golden Globe for best animated film.
The Annies were presented by the International Animated Film Society at UCLA’s Royce Hall.
“Coraline” and “The Princess and the Frog,” which also are nominated for the feature animation Oscar, scored three Annies apiece.
The awards to the stop-motion 3-D “Coraline” went to Shane Prigmore for character design in a feature production, Bruno Coulais for best music in a feature and Tadahiro Uesugi for production design in a feature.
The hand-drawn “Princess and the Frog” won Annies for James Mansfield for animated effects, Eric Goldberg for character animation and Jen Cody for voice acting in a feature.
The stop-motion “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” also an Oscar contender, won best writing in a feature for Wes Anderson and Noah Baumbach.
On the television side, the ABC/Disney holiday special “Prep and Landing” won three awards, including best animated TV production.

The USC Libraries Scripter Award honors both the author and the screenwriter of the year’s best adaptation. The Scripter for “Up in the Air” went to novelist Walter Kirn and to Jason Reitman and Shelton Turner, who adapted Kirn’s book for the screen.
The other nominees were “Crazy Heart,” “District 9,” “An Education” and “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire.”
“Up in the Air,” a dramedy about a corporate downsizer, received six Oscar nominations last week including for best film, actor for George Clooney, director for Reitman and adapted screenplay for Reitman and Turner. They also are nominated for a Writers Guild Award.
The past two Scripter Award winners-- “No Country for Old Men” and “Slumdog Millionaire” -- went on to receive the adapted screenplay Oscar.
Eric Roth (“Forrest Gump”) was this year’s recipient of the Scripter Literary Achievement Award.
The winners were announced at the university’s Edward L. Doheny Library.
