‘How to Get Away with Murder’ recap: Lies reveal more secrets

Share

One of “How to Get Away with Murder’s” most mysterious characters finally got some attention this week when a layer of the never-ending enigma that is Bonnie Winterbottom (Liza Weil) was peeled back, only to leave us with more questions than answers.

Picking up where last week’s episode left off, Bonnie is explaining to Asher (Matt McGorry) the (false) details of how she killed Sam (Tom Verica) -- seriously, the girl should win an Oscar for that performance. Despite Bonnie’s plea to not go to Emily Sinclair (Sarah Burns) with this information, Asher, who is shaken by the admission, contemplates testifying against Bonnie and the others, only to run out of the courtroom at the last second.

Back at the office, Bonnie confesses to Annalise (Viola Davis) and Frank (Charlie Weber) what she has told Asher, and Annalise, unsurprisingly, lashes out at Bonnie yet again. The Keating Five -- or Four, as Asher has been AWOL for quite some time now -- are all on edge just waiting for the police to kick down the door and arrest them, and all the whispering behind closed doors among Annalise, Bonnie and Frank is putting their suspicions on high alert.

Things get even messier when Asher, after storming out of the courtroom, rushes into the office to talk to Annalise to get the full truth -- or at least the full version of the lie they are telling him -- on Sam’s murder.

As Asher continues to struggle with the decision about whether to go to the Sinclair with this new information, the rest of the Keating Five are on edge about their own impending doom. After noticing Wes’ odd behavior, the rest of the group decides to follow him, only to discover that he is meeting up with Levi (Matt Cohen). Wes is forced to reveal to the group and Levi’s girlfriend, Michaela (Aja Naomi King), that he is Eggs911 -- Rebecca’s foster brother and the person she texted before her murder.

In just a matter of seconds, things turn from bad to worse when Levi is arrested for drug possession due to the large quantity of drugs that Frank planted in his car to help rid Annalise of her Levi problem. Wes, undeterred by Levi’s arrest, is still hellbent on figuring out what happened to Rebecca and follows up a lead to a storage unit where he hopes to find major evidence. When the four arrive at the unit, the only thing in there is the suitcase that Frank stuffed Rebecca’s body in. However, someone -- under Frank’s instructions, of course -- switched the body out and filled the suitcase with cash instead.

Unsure about what to do to help Bonnie and enraged that Wes is not only lying to her but working with Nate behind her back, Annalise begins to crack. However, she regains her composure long enough to help her colleague and friend by taking a trip to Asher’s. Although he finally made up his mind to take the plea deal and testify against Bonnie, Annalise showing up at his door with a horrifying video that enlightens him on the horrible sexual abuse that Bonnie endured during her childhood, might make him change his mind.

In the episode’s final minutes, we are once again taken back to the scene of Annalise’s shooting. However, this time we are shown Bonnie’s and Asher’s perspective from fleeing the scene. After getting far enough away, a calm and collected Bonnie stops at a gas station bathroom to throw away her bloody shirt and wash blood -- could be Annalise’s, Emily Sinclair’s or the blood of both -- off her. When she returns to the car, Asher is gone and is in the police station ready to “give his statement.”

So what did you think of the episode? What did you think about Bonnie’s past? Were you shocked? What do you think Asher will do? Sound off in the comments and check back for what trouble Annalise and her crew get themselves into next week.

Suspects so far in Annalise’s shooting:

Bonnie: Running from the scene of the shooting only to wash blood off herself and change clothes looks pretty suspicious. Annalise doesn’t always treat Bonnie very well; could she have finally snapped and shot her?

Levi: Rebecca’s foster brother sure seems like he is out for revenge and pretty much assumes that Annalise is responsible for his foster sister’s death, so maybe he is the one who shot her.

Nate: OK, honestly, he has the best motive of all, after what she has put him through. Also, he is driving the other students around and seems to have a pretty sure plan in place. Did he orchestrate Annalise’s shooting?

Wes: Will he find out about what really happened to Rebecca and snap? Who knows, but he definitely has a motive.

Connor: At first he seemed a little guilty by saying this was her fault and that everything was her fault as she lay dying. However, with the pair’s increasing tension and last episode’s confrontation, it looks like he has a bit more of a motive. Could he have pulled the trigger?

Caleb and Catherine: The shooting still took place at their mansion, it looks a bit suspicious and Caleb was waiting for Michaela at her apartment; something isn’t right there.
