‘How to Get Away with Murder’ recap: More mysteries, characters unravel

Share

With only one episode left until the mystery of “who shot Annalise” is revealed, the list of suspects is getting longer. And while that colossal mystery looms, plenty of others have come to light and a few have even been divulged.

Once again, the episode opens during the time of Annalise’s (Viola Davis) shooting; however, this time it is not the aftermath that is the focus, but the minutes before. Michaela (Aja Naomi King) and Connor (Jack Falahee) are rushing out of Caleb (Kendrick Sampson) and Catherine’s (Amy Okuda) house, while Laurel (Karla Souza) and Wes (Alfred Enoch) — who is holding a gun — are standing close by and agreeing to stop the other two.

The episode then shifts back four days — see, we are getting closer to the big reveal — where Wes discovers Levi’s gun in his dresser, the Keating Five are still searching for more information about their new suspect, Phillip (Jefferson White), in Caleb and Catherine’s case, and Asher is dealing with the repercussions of Emily Sinclair’s (Sarah Burns) telling Bonnie (Liza Weil) the truth about Trotter Lake.

Annalise, meanwhile, is dealing with Nate (Billy Brown) being accused by Sinclair of giving his wife pills to kill herself, which brings her ex/current lover, Eve Rothlow (Famke Janssen), back into the picture to defend Nate. Annalise also is working on a new case where a woman’s stalker is accused of causing her husband to commit suicide.

Laurel, who is helping Annalise on the new case, once again proves her worth to the Keating Five, when she wins the case by uncovering that the victim’s wife was having an affair with the assistant district attorney who is prosecuting Annalise’s client — which was the real reason her husband committed suicide.

With Laurel helping on the new case and the others working on finding more about Phillip, Wes is sent to keep an eye on Nate’s trial. He witnesses what he perceives to be Eve trying to throw the trial to get Nate sent to jail. But Eve had a plan all along and got one of the nurses — with Nate’s help — to alter his wife’s blood results so that no drugs would show in her system. Nate is once again a free man — honestly, he must be really sick of courtrooms.

Back at the office, Connor and Michaela are searching for more information on their new lead suspect when Frank (Charlie Weber) brings in Connor’s boyfriend, Oliver (Conrad Ricamora), to help, much to Connor’s chagrin. The four of them agree to try to lure Phillip by inviting him on a date with Connor off a dating website. What they do not know is that Phillip is already onto them, so while Michaela, Laurel and Frank are staking out Connor’s date, Phillip is actually heading over to Oliver’s apartment to kidnap him. At least that’s what we are led to believe.

During all of this insanity, Asher is still trying to apologize to Bonnie for what happened at Trotter Lake, but as a victim of sexual abuse, she is not going to let him get away with not trying to stop a gang rape at a party he threw. Asher pleads with her for forgiveness, but in the process, he alludes to knowing about Bonnie’s past. Thrown a bit by Asher’s knowledge, Bonnie confronts Annalise for revealing this information to him, and the two once again have a heated argument that ends with Bonnie’s telling Annalise she wishes she would die.

In the episode’s final minutes, time flashes forward again to where the opening sequence left off as Laurel and Wes are running off to stop Michaela and Connor. Michael and Connor refuse to go back with Wes and Laurel, but the arguing stops when the flying body of Emily Sinclair hits the ground, spraying blood everywhere. The four of them look up, dumbfounded, at the person who just rolled Emily’s body off the balcony: Bonnie.

What did you think of the episode? Did Bonnie kill Emily Sinclair? Do you think that Annalise is Wes’ mother and that is why she is protecting him so much? Sound off in the comments and check back for what trouble Annalise and her crew get themselves into next week.

Suspects so far in Annalise’s shooting:

Frank: He put on quite the show at the hospital, but then easily slipped back into his steely, cold self once past the hospital cameras. Did he finally have enough with being Annalise’s Mr. Fix-it and try to rid himself of her for good?

Bonnie: The fight these two had this week was a doozy. Bonnie even went as far as telling Annalise she wants her to die. Did Bonnie finally make good on her wish? Also it was revealed that she pushed Emily Sinclair off the building, so did she also shoot Annalise?

Levi: Rebecca’s foster brother sure seems like he is out for revenge and pretty much assumes that Annalise is responsible for his sister’s death, so maybe he is the one who shot her.

Nate: OK, honestly, he has the biggest motive of all after what she has put him through. Also, he is driving the other students around and seems to have a pretty sure plan in place. Did he orchestrate Annalise’s shooting?

Wes: He has Levi’s gun and Annalise was shot. He is looking more guilty with every episode.

Connor: At first he seemed a little guilty by saying this was her fault and that everything was her fault as she lay dying. But with the pair’s increasing tension and last episode’s confrontation, it looks like he has a bit more of a motive. Could he have pulled the trigger?

Caleb and Catherine: The shooting took place at their mansion, and it looks a bit suspicious. But Caleb was waiting for Michaela at her apartment. Something isn’t quite right there.
