'Moesha' (1996-2001)( UPN )
Who they are: Moesha Mitchell (played by singer Brandy Norwood) is a teenager living in L.A.'s Leimert Park neighborhood. For years since her mother died, she has taken care of her father Frank and younger brother Myles. But when a teacher at her school, Dee, marries Frank, Moesha feels threatened by her new stepmother. As time goes on, the two females of the house would learn to appreciate and cherish each other's presence. Moesha's boy-crazy best friends, Kim and Niecy, as well as her eternally hungry neighbor and pal Hakeem are also in the mix to support Mo throughout all the drama in which she finds herself.
What the kids like: Watching Mo and her friends sting each other with one-liners during frequent trips to the smoothie shop on the fictional college campus of Cal U.
What parents couldn't get enough of: Watching a comical and complex representation of a black teenage girl dealing with everyday issues in a local L.A. community in a way that typically avoided pandering to racial stereotypes.
