Jimmy Fallon performs as Neil Young on ‘Late Show’

Jimmy Fallon is used to welcoming guests to “Late Night,” but this week he’s been hitting the talk-show circuit to promote “Guys With Kids,” the new sitcom he produced. On Thursday he paid a visit to “The Late Show,” where he and David Letterman, the very first host of “Late Night,” talked shop.

Although his dislike of Fallon’s NBC colleague, Jay Leno, is legendary, Letterman frequently welcomes other late-night personalities to his show and is rarely anything but gracious (except, of course, when the subject of Leno comes up). Such was the case on Thursday, as Letterman and Fallon discussed the history of the various Rockefeller Center studios where “Late Night” has been produced. In another nice moment of host commiseration, Fallon told Letterman about an awkward encounter during the London Olympics with Bruce Jenner, who warned him in rather colorful terms to quit making fun of his surgically enhanced face.

But the highlight of his appearance was yet to come: It just so happened Fallon, a skilled mimic, was booked on the same night as legendary rock singer Neil Young, one of the many celebrities he impersonates. He marked the occasion by performing the theme song from “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” as Neil Young. As fans of “Late Night” will know, Fallon often does these kinds of musical mash-ups (this reporter’s personal favorite: Bob Dylan doing the “Charles in Charge” theme), but Young’s presence in the building somehow made it even more enjoyable.
