As Allison Carr on Showtime’s “Homeland,” Miranda Otto had us all fooled.

Otto’s character was a new addition to Homeland’s fifth season, one viewers would come to learn was a double agent. While serving as the CIA chief in Berlin, she also moonlighted as an informant for the Russians. Oh, and she did more than flirt with the show’s beloved Saul Berenson.

Quite the departure from playing warrior princess Éowyn in “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy.

Otto stopped by the Los Angeles Times earlier this week to discuss her duplicitous role, and she couldn’t help but beam when discussing the joy of being a female villain.

There was one scene in particular that was Otto’s favorite to shoot.

“By far and away, shooting Conrad in the head!” Otto said, referring to Allison’s CIA handler, before launching into laughter. “I’ve never gotten to really do action-y things. And when that scene came up — it’s sort of a typical male kind of thing.”

Otto continued: “That was a part of this part that was so interesting. She didn’t have children; she was a career woman. There were definitely female parts to the character. But a lot of it could have been a man. It was so fun doing all the action and shooting.”
