What it is: One of the most enduring templates for the crime show, embracing both hard-boiled and suave central characters. PIs also tend to do well with the ladies.
Current example: Not many out there right now. "Psych" has some of the trappings of a PI show, but it could also be considered a buddy show (see slide No. 4). Classic: "The Rockford Files," with James Garner as the laconic, disheveled Jim Rockford, who took on mostly small-time cases for "$200 a day, plus expenses" in order to keep up the rent on his shabby mobile home in Malibu. Others: "Magnum, PI," "Simon & Simon," "77 Sunset Strip," "Remington Steele" |
