Jin Patisserie in Venice to close at end of March

Kristy Choo, the owner of Jin Patisserie, is closing her popular 10-year-old Venice sweets shop and cafe on March 24.

“It’s one of those things that is not within my control,” Choo says. “Rent is going up like crazy on Abbot Kinney.” She says at one point her landlord was seeking a tenant that could pay $40,000 a month.

Choo says she would like to find a new retail location but meanwhile has opened a new production facility in Culver City. Her entire kitchen staff has moved to the new 6,000-square-foot space, where she will focus on wholesale orders.

“We were running out of space,” she says. “I just want to put all my energy in concentrating on the production kitchen right now instead of feeling upset. I’d rather put my energy into expanding the business.”

Jin Patisserie also will continue to take retail orders via its website, or customers can call and pick up orders for Choo’s macarons, chocolates, cakes such as Pistachio Dacquoise or Belgian Marquise (dark chocolate, graham crackers, roasted almonds, dried fruits and rum) and cookies -- chocolate chip, crunchy cornflake, green tea, lavender almond and yek yek (a family recipe).
