Culinary SOS: Oatmeal raisin cookies from Standard Baking Co.
Dear SOS: On a trip up the coast of Maine, we found a wonderful bakery in Portland called Standard Baking Co. Everything was delicious, but my husband declared the oatmeal cookies the best he'd ever had, and we made a special detour on the return route to buy more cookies. I'd love it if you could obtain their recipe, so I could surprise him with a batch.

Shortbread: A simple cookie with options
Butter, flour, sugar and a little bit of salt. There's not much that's simpler than a shortbread. But for those of us who love to bake, it's the perfect kind of recipe. Despite being made from a limited number of inexpensive ingredients, the dough can be transformed into a seemingly endless number of variations. It's also ridiculously easy to make.

Recipe: Oatmeal raisin cookies from Auntie Em's Kitchen
Dear SOS: I was at Auntie Em's Kitchen in Eagle Rock today for the first time. While they are known for their amazing cupcakes and fantastic food, today I had the best oatmeal cookie I've ever eaten. It was thin, chewy and crispy at the same time, with subtle hints of spices. Absolutely delicious! I'm sorry I didn't bring home a few more. Do you think they might share the recipe with us?

THESE delicate lavender shortbread cookies from Akasha in Culver City are just as delicious as they are wonderfully fragrant. They're melt-in-your-mouth tender, not too sweet, and flecked with pretty lavender.
