National Hamburger Day: Free burger today, if you have the right name

Share

With the kickoff of grilling season comes National Hamburger Day, when America celebrates its favorite food on a bun. Smashburger has a free hamburger deal today, thus celebrating another American favorite: free stuff.

Smashburger will give away free hamburgers to anyone with the last name “Burger” -- or variations on that theme. Smashburger cites WhitePages.com as reporting 21,786 people in the U.S. have the last name Burger.

But all you Weinbergers, Stolzenbergers and Rosenbergers also can get in on the deal: one free Classic Smash with proof of last name -- a driver’s license, passport or picture ID will suffice.

The offer is good at the three Smashburgers in Los Angeles -- Culver City, Redondo Beach and Thousand Oaks, publicist Kristen Conahan told the Los Angeles Times. It’s also valid at other Smashburgers nationwide.

And in case you missed it, The Times’ Battle of the Burgers is underway. We’re looking for your great burger recipes -- send a photo to the L.A. Times Food Facebook page. We’ll take the recipes that get top votes and try them out in the Times Test Kitchen. Then we’ll feature the top burger makers and their creations in Daily Dish as well as our Food section.

In the meantime, share any other National Hamburger Day freebies you know of on Facebook or on Twitter @latimesfood.
