Two Guys Lose Weight: Valentine’s Day can be too much good stuff

Gary Lee, who purchased a huge bouquet of roses in a ornate vase, tries to figure how he will fit the mass of flowers into his car. When a passerby holding a much smaller bouquet asked how much he spent for the huge display, Lee answered, "Let's put it this way, she's not getting anything else for a while."

Got lucky and got to take exactly who I wanted on a nice Valentine’s Day dinner Monday night.

We had the most interesting conversation, several shots of whiskey, and yes, America, some dishes that were going to help me get neither fit nor trim.

A while back, I remembered that she was inspired while at a yoga studio. “It made me want to put a down payment on a trip to India,” she told me.

So when I found out that no one had yet asked her out for Valentine’s Day, I asked her and was very happy when she said yes. Instead of Italian, I figured, what about Indian food?

We had some nice lamb bits in a brown sauce. These weird spicy quesadilla things. You know I don’t know what we ate. It was good. And there was rice. And also creamy spinach, which was my favorite.

I learned that whiskey was about 85 calories a shot. So we drank water in between the toasts and shots.

We didn’t eat everything. I’m telling you, it was a good conversation. Way better than anyone around us, I’ll tell you that. But I left feeling full in my stomach and warm inside.

The rest of the day I ate those crazy cookie-diet cookies, except for one-quarter of a piece of a vegan grilled cheese sandwich that was made near my desk on a George Foreman grill.

Anything grilled is good for you, I hear, and the vegan cheese tasted just like the “real” thing.

Even though Monday felt like a splurge day, I know I won’t slip into my old routine. One reason is because of this ESPN shirt that has been sitting in my closet for a while.

I got it as a gift, and it was a little tight to get into. It’s a black shirt, so I pretended that no matter how far out my belly jutted, you couldn’t see it because of the color of the shirt. So wrong, and one day someone teased me about the little baby I was seemingly carrying around.

The ESPN shirt was tossed to the back of the closet.

On Monday, after my hike, I was feeling particularly cocky, so I dug around, found the shirt and put it on.

It fits so well now, but I want it to fit even better.

That’s what will keep me going.
