Based on the bestselling YA urban fantasy book series by Cassandra Clare, “Shadowhunters” follows 18-year-old Clarissa “Clary” Fray as she becomes entangled in the world of Shadowhunters — human-angel hybrids who hunt down demons — after her mother is attacked and taken by a demon. In order to save her mother, Clary must immerse herself in a world of faeries, warlocks, vampires and werewolves, uncover family secrets, tap into powers she never knew she had and team up with a band of Shadowhunters.
Clary is accompanied on her demon-fighting quest by her geeky-yet-handsome best friend Simon, to be portrayed by Rosende. In the TV series, Simon is an accounting student by day and a musician by night. Simon’s “loyalty and feelings for Clary are tested as he fights alongside her,” ABC Family’s official character description reads.
Toubia has been cast as Isabelle Lightwood, a trained fighter “as lethal as she is attractive,” according to her character description. Isabelle, an expert with her whip, fights in high heels and has a weakness for bad boys.
Rosende and Toubia join Dominic Sherwood, who was cast earlier this month as Jace Wayland, a “narcissistic and lethally gorgeous” demon-hunter who serves as the love interest for Clary. Casting decisions for other main characters, including Clary, have yet to be announced.
“Shadowhunters” is being produced by Constantin Film and will be helmed by Ed Decter – a screenwriter and producer whose credits include “There’s Something About Mary,” “Unforgettable,” “The Client List” and “In Plain Sight” – and McG (“Supernatural,” “Chuck”). McG will also direct the first episode.
The show is expected to reboot the saga after the 2013 big-screen adaptation “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones” opened to lackluster reviews and disappointing box-office numbers. The film has earned $31 million domestically. A planned sequel, “The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes,” was shelved last year.
“Shadowhunters” is set to go into production in Toronto this month.
