‘Matewan,’ ‘West Side Story’ and ‘Waterfront’ for the classic film fan’s delight

This is a good week to be a classic film fan, as three top productions appear on big screens around town.

On Sunday, June 26, catch Elia Kazan’s 1954 “On the Waterfront” and its memorable story of love and corruption starring Marlon Brando, Eva Marie Saint and Lee J. Cobb. At 5:30 p.m. at the American Cinematheque’s Aero Theater, Santa Monica.

On Tuesday, June 28, John Sayles’ gripping 1987 “Matewan,” beautifully photographed by Haskell Wexler, stars Chris Cooper and David Strathairn in the story of a brutal 1920 West Virginia confrontation between mine owners and striking workers. At 7:30 p.m. at the Hammer Museum, Westwood.

On Wednesday June 29, it’s the brilliant 1961 musical “West Side Story,” winner of 10 Academy Awards and memorable for its Jerome Robbins choreography and Leonard Bernstein-Stephen Sondheim score. At 7:30 p.m. at the Ahrya Fine Arts Theater, Beverly Hills, with costars George Chakiris and Russ Tamblyn appearing.
