Ethan Hawke in talks to join Denzel Washington in ‘Magnificent Seven’

Ethan Hawke could soon be back in the saddle with Denzel Washington and Antoine Fuqua for MGM’s “Magnificent Seven.” A spokesperson for Hawke confirmed to the Los Angeles Times that the actor is in final negotiations to join the western remake, which would reunite him with his “Training Day” co-star and director.

Variety first reported that Hawke, 44, is closing in on the film, which also has Chris Pratt and Haley Bennett attached.

The story of a motley band of gunslingers enlisted to defend a town from bandits, “Magnificent Seven” is based on the 1960 classic directed by John Sturges and starring Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen and Charles Bronson. That film was a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s “Seven Samurai.”

John Lee Hancock (“The Blind Side”) wrote the most recent draft of the new film, which Nic Pizzolatto (“True Detective”) previously worked on.

Hawke, Washington and Fuqua’s prior film together was the gritty 2001 police drama “Training Day,” which found Hawke portraying an idealistic young L.A. police officer and Washington playing against type as a charismatic rogue detective.

Powered by the duo’s chemistry, the film grossed $76 million in the United States (the budget was under $50 million) and earned Oscar nominations for both actors, with Washington winning for lead actor.

Hawke’s stock is high after starring in “Boyhood,” which also earned him an Oscar nomination. His upcoming films include the military drama “Good Kill,” the Chet Baker biopic “Born to Be Blue” and the documentary he directed, “Seymour: An Introduction,” about the classical pianist Seymour Bernstein.
