‘Hollywood Costume’ exhibit coming to future site of Academy Museum

Dorothy’s ruby slippers are coming home -- to Hollywood, that is. Cinema’s most famous shoes, which the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences acquired in 2012 for its future museum, have been on loan to London’s Victoria and Albert Museum for the London institution’s touring “Hollywood Costume” show.

The academy announced Tuesday that the “Hollywood Costume” exhibition will travel to the future site of the Academy Museum at the old May Co. Building at Fairfax Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard for five months beginning Oct. 2.

The exhibition, which explores the role of costume design in storytelling, may give a hint as to what to expect from the Academy Museum when it opens in 2017.

“Hollywood Costume” will include more than 145 pieces, including 30 costumes the academy is adding to the existing collection, such as items worn by Jared Leto in “Dallas Buyers Club” and garments from recent films including “The Hunger Games,” “Django Unchained,” “Lee Daniels’ The Butler,” “American Hustle” and 2013’s “The Great Gatsby.”

There will also be pieces from classic films such as Charlie Chaplin’s costume in “The Tramp,” Marilyn Monroe’s dress in “The Seven Year Itch” and a Barbra Streisand costume from “Funny Girl” -- and, of course, Judy Garland’s ruby slippers and blue-and-white gingham dress from “The Wizard of Oz.”

“Hollywood Costume” is being curated by academy governor Deborah Nadoolman Landis (“Raiders of the Lost Ark”), with Christopher Fraylin, professor emeritus of cultural history at Royal College of Art, and Keith Lodwick, assistant curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Collectors who have loaned to the exhibition include movie studios, costume houses, actors, museums, archives and private individuals.
