Jennifer Lopez is continuing to follow her maternal instincts. After playing a suburban cougar in the low-budget thriller “The Boy Next Door,” Lopez is reuniting with Universal Pictures on the comedy “Mothers I’d Like to...,” the Los Angeles Times has confirmed.

Lopez is to star in and produce the film, which has been described as a cross between “Bridesmaids” and “The First Wives Club.” Plot details have yet to be revealed, though the title is clearly a reference to an acronym that is well-known to teenage boys.

Universal acquired the pitch for “Mothers” from Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, who is Lopez’s producing partner and the originator of the idea, and screenwriter Mark Perez, who will pen the script.

Deadline Hollywood first reported the news.

Lopez was last seen on the big screen in “Boy Next Door,” an erotic thriller about a high school teacher (Lopez) who dallies with her strapping 19-year-old neighbor (Ryan Guzman), only to learn that he’s a psychopath.

Although the film was shredded by reviewers and widely ridiculed for a literary goof, it grossed $35 million dollars in North America on a paltry $4-million budget. (You do the math.)

Lopez’s performance in “Boy Next Door” also earned her a tub of golden popcorn at the recent MTV Movie Awards, for best scared-as-... performance. The honor was capped by a brief celebratory dance from “Magic Mike XXL” star Channing Tatum, so, all in all, it has been a pretty good week for Lopez.
