Drake’s ‘Energy’ video is his coolest, strangest yet

Share

Drake is pledging his allegiance to Apple Music in a major way.

The superstar rapper rolled out a slew of goodies on the new streaming service on Friday including a music video, single, interview with Zane Lowe and news of his own Beats 1 Radio show.

The video for his anthemic stomper “Energy” (which uses the n-word a lot, expletives and brief nudity) is certain to get the most buzz, simply for being the quirkiest, trippiest thing he’s ever done.

In the visual, directed by Fleur & Manu and released exclusively to Apple, the Toronto rapper-singer channels a number of personas through the use of CGI.

Drake appears as Oprah Winfrey during her famous interview with Tom Cruise. He raps a few lines as Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Benjamin Franklin – pictured on the $100 bill of course. He’s LeBron James in one scene and in the next, Justin Bieber, channeling the gossip magnet’s well-known Calvin Klein ad.

The rapper also tackles Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” look – minus the nudity, tears or machinery – and Kanye West’s bizarre “Bound 2.” And in the span of 20 seconds he’s a Ken doll, Barack Obama and Al Cowlings speeding down a highway in a Ford Bronco during the O.J. Simpson chase.

The video is the first visual from “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late,” the surprise album he dropped on iTunes earlier this year.

Drake also premiered “My Love,” a new collaboration with his OVO signees Majid Jordan during an interview with Lowe, and announced his OVO Sound Radio show premieres Saturday on Beats 1.
