When the fourth episode of Shonda Rhimes’ “How to Get Away With Murder” aired in October, Viola Davis’ character stuns the show’s audience when she took off her wig.

In the episode, Davis’ character, Annalise Keating, learns about the shocking evidence involving her husband found on the phone of a girl who was murdered. Moments after, she retreats to her bedroom and removes everything that creates the idea of what a sexualized woman should look like.

At a recent Envelope Screening Series presentation of the show, Davis noted that “As an actor, my business is creating a human being. I know that at the end of the day we take our mask off. When we walk into the house, we become who we really are and it’s not always pretty.”

Davis knew that that act, as simple as it seems, was actually a bold move. Woman are so often sexualized on TV, she wanted to get away from that and show a woman with her armor off.
