2 Chainz buys a Hollywood Hills home with a legendary recording studio
A new musician has landed on the mother ship. Hip-hop artist 2 Chainz has bought the former Hollywood Hills home and recording studio of rock guitarist Steve Vai for $2.45 million.
The Grammy-winning Vai owned the home for decades before selling it last year for $1.5 million. During his ownership, the property’s 1,400-square-foot studio, dubbed the Mothership Studio, was used by such musical talents as Ozzy Osbourne, Eddie Van Halen, the Yardbirds and Slash.
The three-story Mediterranean, built in 1986 and recently renovated, has living and family rooms, a den, an updated kitchen, three bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms. Wide balconies extend from two levels of the 3,400-square-foot home.
Entered through a separate entrance, the studio features a live room, a booth, a microphone room, a control room, a kitchen and a lounge.
Outdoors, a large brick patio has steps leading up to a raised deck. Views from the property take in the surrounding canyon and city lights.
The house came up for sale in June for $2.5 million, records show.
Jill Kaufman and Rusty Spragg of Keller Williams Realty were the listing agents. Michael Berlin of MBB Realty Advisors represented the buyer.
Vai, 56, got his start touring with Frank Zappa. His “No Substitutions – Live in Osaka” won a best pop instrumental album Grammy in 2001. He won rock instrumental performance Grammys for “Peaches in Regalia” in 2008 and “Sofa” in 1993.
2 Chainz, whose legal name is Tauheed Epps, has hits that include “Birthday Song” and “Duffle Bag Boy.” His third studio album, “ColleGrove,” was released in March.
