Beverly Hills estate of Desmond’s department stores owner seeks $8.495 million
The longtime Beverly Hills home of Harold Kapelovitz, the late retailer and philanthropist who owned the department store chain Desmond’s & Associates, and his late wife, Lee, has come on the market for $8.495 million.
Set on more than half an acre on North Hillcrest Road, the split-level house was originally built in 1969 but has been remodeled in a contemporary style.
The 5,177 square feet of living space includes a living room with a mirrored wet bar, a formal dining room, an office, five bedrooms and six bathrooms. Firehouse red-hued cabinetry creates visual interest in the kitchen, which has a center island and an adjoining breakfast room.
Sliding glass doors open to a backyard with ample patio space, lush landscaping and a swimming pool and spa.
The home has been owned by the Kapelovitz family for nearly four decades, records show.

Harold Kapelovitz, who died in 2007 at 82, purchased the Desmond’s chain of 17 department stores in 1977. He became chief executive of Walker-Scott Corp. in 1985 following a merger between the two companies.
The Kapelovitzs both sat on the Board of Governors at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. In 2001, the couple was recognized by President Jimmy Carter and Rosalynn Carter for their philanthropic efforts.
