Readers React: One teacher’s effort to feed needy students

To the editor: Thank you for the article on the Los Angeles Unified School District’s classroom breakfast program. It is important to note that many of the surrounding school districts, widely considered to be more affluent, also need this service. (“Most Californians support serving breakfast to students during school day,” April 9)

My son, a middle school teacher in a South Bay district, stocks his classroom with healthful snacks for students who claim to be hungry during the day. I’ve begun contributing to his effort because I can’t stand the thought of hungry children trying to learn.

However, the question remains: Why are the teachers forced to take up the slack in not only teaching but feeding their students?

I should mention that my son has come up with an innovative way of preventing waste by students who don’t want their lunches: He collects them and offers them to his afternoon students.

Interestingly, as a new teacher in his district this year, he was encouraged to think outside the box when it comes to his students’ nutritional needs.
