To the editor: The reverberating power of one single state finally doing the right thing to address the most critical and urgent threat to humanity cannot be underestimated. Gov. Jerry Brown has thrown down the gauntlet, challenging other politicians of conscience to follow. Even Pope Francis will press for urgent action when the United Nations convenes in Paris next December to address climate change. (“California’s greenhouse gas emission targets are getting tougher,” April 29)

The only obstacle that remains is the power of the oil and gas lobby, including the Koch brothers-funded groups Americans for Prosperity and the Heartland Institute. Just recently, Heartland said it was sending “real scientists” to Rome to school the pope about the myth of global warming. It’s probable that they won’t get to meet with Francis.

The days are numbered for polluter industry shills and the disinformation they spout.

To the editor: This “executive order” thing is getting pretty popular. Brown’s doing a pretty good job imitating President Obama: First there were water cuts, and now carbon emissions are ordered to be further reduced.

What Legislature? Governing by fiat is less messy.

To the editor: So Brown wants California to cut greenhouse gas emissions to 40% below 1990 levels by 2030. He also ordered a cut in water use.

We’re cutting water use partly to preserve groundwater supplies, and we’re cutting greenhouse gases like carbon and methane released from natural gas.

Sounds good, but when is Brown finally going to call for a moratorium on fracking?
