Readers React: Having a green lawn is un-Californian
To the editor: Thanks to The Times for its front-page article on ripping out laws. (“Amid drought, the West is no place for a lawn, as Nevada has learned,” May 1)
As the San Fernando Valley Audubon Society’s Audubon-at-Home chairman and a backyard wildlife habitat steward certified by the National Wildlife Federation, for the last 10 years I have been preaching to all I come in contact with via my free lectures and my free landscape design consultations about reducing or eliminating lawns.
The tradition of having a large swath of lawn around one’s home came to this country from soggy olde England, where it was a status symbol. It’s about time that everyone living here in the semiarid Southwest realize that we are not in England.
I suggest that, perhaps with some exceptions, we ban lawns here.
