Readers React: In Alhambra, cultural diversity brings food diversity

Share

To the editor: I suppose journalism allows a color story on the front pages these days, but, really, disgruntled Alhambra residents bemoaning a Ralphs supermarket leaving and a 99 Ranch arriving? (“In Alhambra, demographic shift reaches the grocery store,” July 27)

An Alhambra resident is quoted as stating that she knows “the city is changing … but does it have to change our supermarket?” Short answer: yes.

I am a lifelong non-Asian resident of this area, and I shop at a 99 Ranch store whenever I am in a part of Los Angeles that has one. You would think the food sold there was from Mars the way it’s talked about in your article.

I must state my strong belief that the cultural diversity that leads to wonderful food diversity is one of the most appealing features about living here.
