Readers React: L.A.’s gun magazine law is no harm to the 2nd Amendment

To the editor: A letter writer asserted that the city of Los Angeles’ ban on gun magazines that hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition is in violation of the 2nd Amendment because it reduces the “firepower” of gun users. The writer correctly claimed that the 2nd Amendment prohibits infringement upon the right to keep and bear arms. (“‘Shall not be infringed’ -- get it, anti-gun activists?,” Readers React, Aug. 1)

But limiting magazines to 10 rounds in no way infringes upon that right.

To that way of thinking, there have been numerous “infringements” and firepower reductions that violate the 2nd Amendment, starting with laws against machine guns, bazookas, mortars, flame throwers and .50-caliber sniper rifles, to name a few.

Restricting the size of magazines to reduce firepower is in no way at odds with the Constitution, given the other weapons that have been restricted by necessity.
