Opinion: What Christian values allow Mike Pence to still support Donald Trump?

To the editor: How many ways can you try to glamorize a pig? Ask Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, since the Republican vice presidential nominee has tried them all. No matter how many ways you dress it up, it’s still a pig. (“While other Republicans have fled Donald Trump, Mike Pence is doubling down on their campaign,” Oct. 11)

If anyone has a judgment problem, it’s clearly Pence. But when you consider Pence’s long career attacking women’s personal healthcare decisions and LGBT rights, his allegiance to the misogynistic Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump isn’t surprising.

Pence’s measured and dignified defenses of Trump’s vulgarity won’t save his Great White Hope. But his steadfast loyalty to “this good man,” a vulgar and serial adulterer antithetical in every way to his supposed pious Christian values, will forever stain his legacy.

To the editor: Interesting how forgiveness goes to Trump but not to Hillary and Bill Clinton. Does Pence’s faith allow for selective forgiveness?

I find this hypocritical.

To the editor: If Trump’s candidacy causes the Republican Party to implode, it couldn’t happen to a more deserving bunch.

For years, Republican leaders have pandered shamelessly to particular groups to secure and solidify them as their base, and they succeeded. They thought they could control that base, but those voters now control them, and the GOP is reaping the whirlwind.

I welcome the party’s self-destruction. Something will take its place, and there is at least a chance it might be more decent and responsible.
