Opinion: No comparison between Obamacare and the Republicans’ tax bill

Share

To the editor: Jonah Goldberg wrongly compares the GOP tax plan with the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. (“Will tax reform be the GOP’s Obamacare?” Opinion, Dec. 12)

First, the intent of the former was to help low-income people obtain access to healthcare, while the later intends to put more money in corporate hands, from where it will “trickle down” to the rest of the economy. This is a proposition disproved by history and dismissed by many prominent economists.

The worst part is that the benefit to corporations will be paid for by blowing a hole in the deficit and, later, eliminating or shrinking a wide range of social programs.

As the Affordable Care Act was implemented, popular support followed, as people saw they were receiving a benefit. I can’t see how the Republicans’ tax plan will actually please many people.
