Coaches’s handshake turns angry after Washington State-Arizona State game
It’s a good thing Washington State and Arizona State played a late game Saturday because the coaches’ handshake at midfield was strictly for mature audiences.
Todd Graham, the Arizona State coach, lit into Washington State Coach Mike Leach with a diatribe that appeared to include at least one expletive.
The moment was caught on camera by the Pac-12 Network after Washington State cruised to a 37-32 win, but the final score had nothing to do with Graham’s anger.
Earlier in the week, Leach complained about Arizona State stealing signals. He had made a similar allegation last season.
“I think they still steal signs, and we’ll have to keep an eye on that,” he said this time. “That is a very unsavory practice they have, so we’ll have to do what we can to defend against it.”
The Pac-12 Conference issued a reminder that there is no rule against stealing signs. It also fined Leach $10,000 for his “disparaging” comment.
On Saturday night in Tempe, Graham added insult to injury. Leach appeared a bit stunned, merely walking away.
