You can see the DisneyNature film “Oceans” for free and take a free elephant seal rookery tour as part of the annual Coastal Discovery & Stewardship Celebration on Highway 1 in Central California.

The deal: February is a good time to plan a trip to the area to take advantage of the celebration that features activities and local cultural events.

The movie will be screened at 6 p.m. Feb. 17 and 24 at the Hearst Castle Theater inside the visitors center, 750 Hearst Castle Road in San Simeon, (805) 927-6811. Admission is on a first-come basis, and visitors should arrive 15 to 30 minutes before the movie starts.

For a free presentation about the life and habits of elephant seals, meet at the Coastal Discovery Center in San Simeon (across from the entrance to the Hearst Castle Visitors Center) at 10 a.m. Saturdays through March 10. You can view the seals at Piedras Blancas.

When: The film will screen Feb. 17 and 24.

Details: Individuals and families can participate in cleanups and hands-on citizen science programs as well as go tide-pooling in Cayucos or watch for whales from the Estero Bluffs — all for free. Check out Stewardship Activities here.

Northbound drivers on Highway 1 won’t be able to make the entire drive up the coast, however. The road remains closed at Mud Creek due to a massive slide in May 2017.
