Airlines add extra Phoenix flights for Super Bowl weekend

If you’re a Super Bowl XLIX fan eager to go to Phoenix for the Feb. 1 matchup between the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots, you’ll have more flight options to get you there.

After Sunday’s playoffs, airlines added dozens of flights between Jan. 29 and Feb. 2 to accommodate more fliers/fans. The game will be played at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz.

United Airlines announced Monday that tickets went on sale for 55 additional Super Bowl flights. The extra flights are between Phoenix and Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Denver, Houston and Newark. (It also added more service to and from Boston and Seattle to Phoenix).

Southwest Airlines added extra flights also. The airline increased the number of flights between Seattle and Phoenix; and Boston and Manchester, N.H., and Phoenix. If you’re flying Southwest on Feb. 1, the airline will offer free live TV coverage of the game on aircraft enabled with Wi-Fi.

JetBlue said it had sold out on its Phoenix-Boston flights during Super Bowl weekend and added two extra flights (one each way) between Boston and Phoenix. Alaska added four flights (two round-trips) between Seattle and Phoenix.

American Airlines is beefing up its service by adding two extra round-trip flights between Seattle and Phoenix and Boston and Phoneix under its US Airways fleet.

Delta Air Lines has added three flights -- from Phoenix to Boston, Los Angeles and Seattle -- on Feb. 2. The extra Phoenix-L.A. Flight 8789 and the extra Phoenix-Seattle flight 8799 will use aircraft with business and first class seats only, no economy.

One-way L.A.-Phoenix price on Flight 8789, according to the airline’s website, costs $1,237. Delta also is using bigger aircraft to accommodate the Super Bowl crowd on selected flights.
