Dueling boat races

Birds flock over participants in the Border Run, a race from Newport Beach to San Diego that sprang from a dispute between Huntington Beach boat designer Randy Reynolds and the nonprofit Newport Ocean Sailing Assn. The group denied Reynolds entry into its Newport-to-Ensenada International Yacht Race on the grounds that his catamaran is unsafe. He insists it is not.

The Border Run bills itself as the beginning of a “new tradition,” in contrast to the
long-standing Newport-to-Ensenada International Yacht Race. The new race, which
began right before the 62nd edition of its older rival on April 24, 2009, grew out of a dispute.
