The incident occurred around 9:34 p.m., as Aniket, his mother, and his older sister were walking through the parking lot of Westfield Oakridge mall, according to San Jose police Sgt. Enrique Garcia.

The boy’s mother was holding his hand when a 2015 Mercedes struck him, police said. The Mercedes was traveling at a low speed, but caused major injuries to Aniket.

He was taken to an area hospital, where he died a short time later.

The Mercedes driver remained at the scene and was cooperating with investigators.

Police said drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the crash.
