Charges filed against man accused of slashing and stabbing wife 32 times

Charges were filed Tuesday against a 63-year-old man accused of attacking his wife with a series of sharp objects, slashing and stabbing her 32 times.

Kam Hing Wong of Monterey Park was charged with three felony counts -- attempted premeditated murder, injuring a spouse and making criminal threats, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

The felony complaint includes a special allegation that Wong personally used deadly and dangerous weapons, including scissors, a meat cleaver and knives, the district attorney’s office said.

The crime began when Wong attacked his wife with a pair of scissors while she was in the shower at their Monterey Park home nearly a week ago, said Deputy District Attorney Presciliano Duran. His wife attempted to fight him off, but he continued to slash and stab her with a meat cleaver and a knife as she ran through the home, the prosecutor said.

She ran outside naked and bleeding, and Wong allegedly stabbed her again with a knife. There was no mention of a motive.

A passerby at Newmark Avenue and Monterey Pass Road reported seeing the wounded, unclothed woman about 8:30 p.m. last Thursday, Monterey Park Police Lt. Scott Wiese said. Police found her lying in the street.

The woman, described as about 50 years old, survived the attack and was taken to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, Wiese said. A trail of blood led police to the home in the 1200 block of West Newmark Avenue, where officers detained Wong, Wiese said.

If convicted as charged, Wong faces a possible maximum sentence of life in prison. Wong’s Tuesday arraignment was continued to April 26, a public information officer with the DA’s office told the San Gabriel Valley Tribune. Wong’s bail was set at $3 million, and a restraining order was issued against him.
