Man, 7-year-old daughter carjacked at gunpoint outside Pacoima library

Police are searching for a carjacker who ordered a man and his 7-year-old daughter into their truck at gunpoint outside a library in Pacoima on Monday, and then forced them to withdraw cash from an ATM before ditching them at a freeway interchange.

The incident unfolded at about 3 p.m. when the man approached the father and daughter as they were walking into the library at Haddon Avenue and Van Nuys Boulevard, according to Los Angeles police Sgt. Charles Coleman.

The carjacker pulled out a gun and ordered them to get back into their Toyota Tundra and drive to another city, where they were forced to withdraw money from an ATM, Coleman told KTLA-TV.

The carjacker then dropped the man and his daughter off at the interchange between the 5 and 14 freeways. They were trying to flag down a car when they were spotted by a California Highway Patrol officer, who stopped to render assistance, Coleman said.

Authorities tracked down the truck using the vehicle’s global positioning device, police said. When officers arrived, the carjacker was no longer with the vehicle, they said.

The suspect in the case was described by the CHP as about 5 feet, 8 inches tall, weighing 150 pounds and dressed in black. He was armed with a handgun, the CHP said.

The stolen vehicle was a green 2004 Toyota Tundra with a cracked windshield and a right rear tail light that was not working, police said.
