Tanya Erlach is joining the Los Angeles Times as the newsroom’s director of editorial events.

In this new position, Erlach will tap the newsroom’s deep journalistic talent to expand on the L.A. Times’ long tradition of being at the center of the cultural, political and social conversation in California.

Erlach created a live events business for the Texas Tribune, where she has worked since 2009. Before that, she spent seven years programming and producing public events for the New Yorker magazine.

Erlach will work closely with colleagues in the newsroom and on the L.A. Times business side to create new events as well as build up our existing ones, including the California Conversation, Ideas Exchange, The Envelope Screening Series, the Festival of Books and Taste.

At the Texas Tribune, Erlach collaborated with the newsroom to create a series of events, including the annual three-day Texas Tribune Festival, numerous one-day symposiums, weekly forums on public policy issues and film screenings.

Similarly, at the New Yorker, Erlach helped grow editorial events like the annual New Yorker Festival, the New Yorker Conference, the New Yorker Nights series and the New Yorker Speakeasy.

Before joining the New Yorker, she was an associate editor at Nylon magazine and an editorial assistant at Spin magazine.

Erlach, who grew up in Orange County, has a master’s degree in publishing from New York University and a bachelor’s degree in international business and marketing from San Diego State.
