Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, a captive of the Taliban for nearly five years, was released in May 2014 to the U.S. military in Afghanistan in exchange for the handover of five Taliban prisoners held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Several members of Congress have criticized the prisoner swap, saying it was politically motivated and counter to the U.S. policy against negotiating with terrorists.

In March, Bergdahl was charged with desertion and misbehavior before the enemy, which carries a sentence of up to life in prison.
