2 hurt in NYC ice-rink shooting; teen arrested

Two youths were shot and wounded after someone opened fire at a popular ice-skating rink in New York City late Saturday night, police said.

A 14-year-old boy was shot in the torso and a 20-year-old man was hit in the leg at Bryant Park in midtown Manhattan. At least one of the victims appeared to have been shot while skating, according to police and witnesses.

“Just witnessed a shooting in the bryant park skating rink,” one witness tweeted. “Cops attending to a person lying motionless.”

The New York Post reported that the youths were taken to the hospital still wearing their skates, and blood stained the ice. Both victims were stable, police said.

A New York Police Department spokeswoman told the Los Angeles Times that one person was in custody and being questioned about the incident on Sunday but had not been formally arrested in connection with the shooting.

The Associated Press reported that the person in custody, whose identity has not been released, was 16 years old.

After the shooting, which happened around 11 p.m., police could be seen placing cones out on the ice. Park-goers, some still wearing their skates, were temporarily prevented from leaving.

As of Sunday afternoon, according to local media reports, the park was busy and back to normal.
