One person has been shot at South Carolina State University and authorities are searching for suspects, a school spokeswoman said Friday.

The 3,500-student school in Orangeburg, S.C., is on lockdown, Elizabeth Mosely-Hawkins, director of public relations, told the Los Angeles Times.

There was no immediate word about the injured student’s condition, she said.

It was not known how many suspects were being sought, but it is more than one, Mosely-Hawkins said. The suspects are believed to be off campus.

The shooting took place at a school dorm, the Andrew Hugine Suites.

The university, a historically black school about 40 miles south of Columbia, sent out an alert confirming the shooting.
