Three compete for California Senate seat in 26th District
Only about 6% of voters cast ballots in March, when they could choose among eight candidates in a special primary election for the vacant 26th state Senate District seat.
For the May 19 runoff, the field has narrowed to three.
The candidates are Democratic Assemblyman Curren Price Jr.; Republican Nachum Shifren, a rabbi and triathlete; and Peace and Freedom Party candidate Cindy Varela Henderson, a telephone technician.
Political experts expect that Price, a former Inglewood councilman who moved into the district to run, will win handily in the heavily Democratic district.
He has raised more than $300,000 for his campaign.
Labor and other interests have spent far more independently on his behalf, and he has lined up scores of endorsements.
The district includes part of Hollywood, Larchmont, Silver Lake, some Westside and South Los Angeles neighborhoods, Culver City, Baldwin Hills and Ladera Heights.
