Board Puts Measure M Extension on the Ballot

Orange County supervisors on Tuesday voted to place a measure on the Nov. 7 ballot to extend Measure M, a 0.5% sales tax to fund transportation projects, for 30 years.

“It’s significant for our quality of life here,” Anaheim Mayor Curt Pringle said in urging passage of the initiative, at a news conference after the supervisors’ vote.

The tax is set to expire in 2011. If renewed, it could generate $12 billion for widening freeways, increasing commuter rail service and fixing major thoroughfares countywide. In addition, Orange County cities receive as much as half their revenue for street improvements through Measure M, Pringle said.

The measure needs two-thirds voter approval to pass. The tax was first approved in 1990.
