Crash Kills O.C. Girl With No Seat Belt

A 12-year-old girl who was not wearing a seat belt was thrown from an SUV and killed Monday after a tire burst, causing her mother to lose control and crash on the Riverside Freeway in Anaheim, authorities said.

Isabel Galvan, 41, of Anaheim was driving to the beach with another woman and a carload of their children when the left rear tire on her Ford Expedition separated on the eastbound side of the freeway about 10 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

The SUV careened into the center divider and rolled over on top of Mayra Ruby Galvan after she was ejected.

Passersby were able to right the vehicle, but the girl was declared dead at the scene, said CHP Officer Katrina Lundren.

Galvan and her 16-year-old son, who wore seat belts, were taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange with minor injuries, according to the accident report.

Passenger Carmen Mota, 40, of Pico Rivera was not injured. Two of her four children were hospitalized with minor to moderate injuries, the report says.

Galvan could face charges, including child endangerment, because four of the eight occupants were not wearing seat belts, Lundgren said.
