A 13-year-old girl was shot and killed Tuesday inside a school bus in a Miami suburb, police said.

Police said a male student was taken into custody in connection with the attack, but authorities haven’t released his name or age.

The shooting occurred on a private bus while it was at intersection of 137th Avenue and Southwest 296th Street in Homestead, Fla., police told the Los Angeles Times.

After the attack, the girl was taken to Miami Children’s Hospital, police told The Times.

The Associated Press reported that concerned parents had gathered at the scene and that counselors were on their way to the nearby Somerset Academy Silver Palms public charter school.

Officials there could not immediately be reached for comment, and a spokesman with the Miami-Dade Police Department told The Times that it had not yet been confirmed that the boy and the girl were students at the school.

A message on the school’s webpage said, “At this time we are aware there’s a community situation, Somerset Silver Palms is in normal education mode.”
